Cycle 7: FEELING LUCKY

I'm interested in the way meaning accumulates through a series of coincidences and synchronistic experiences. I tend to pull things toward each other that have no logical reason to connect, but they're held within a particular timeframe, place, or symbolism so they start to feel related in a kind of constructed resonance.

This artwork is a record of that kind of associative thinking…an artifact of pushing the usual boundaries of my thinking in parallel directions and finding ways to cross their wiring even if they don't make sense or have a purpose.

Through a chain of associations that involved a childhood memory of floating out so far on a float that we couldn't see land anymore, and knowing we were lucky to make it back, quotes from and conversations with three artist colleagues about fragility, perspective, and rhizomatic thinking, a calculation of the height at which one would need to be at to see 7.777777 miles out to sea, and the volumes required to fill that height (such as approximately 138 Yellow-Bellied Slider turtles stacked on top of one another), the feelings evoked in seeing from a turtle’s perspective, the odds of things lining up just so, and many other seemingly random ideas, I arrived at a moment of manufactured coincidence and a feeling of opening a map into greater and greater detail showing parallel lives, material, and circumstances.

This artifact holds multiple unresolved threads and refuses to let any single one become the explanation.
